I recently answered some questions for an interview that is to be published soon in ACF Magazine. One of them asked me where I get my ideas. I get asked this question all the time. Where do you get your ideas? It makes me a little nuts. Why do people ask this? I realize that people who aren’t in the creative life are curious. I wonder what they think I do though. Do they never experience inspiration? Do they think there is a store where I can buy it? It’s very weird to me to want to know this.
The life of someone who creates is different for everyone. For me, what inspires me has no apparent connection to what I make and I’m going to leave it there. It’s very personal to me. Very private. I have a public statement about it but it’s a complex and changing thing. What I do is essentially self-expression. What I’m expressing and how I do so I can’t explain properly so I won’t try. Sometimes the audience needs to trust the artist.
